Tell us about the new song, 'Devil's Gold'

Breaking news at www.tiamcgraffukfanclub.bravehost.com

Tia and Tommy have allowed me to do something incredibly special here on the uk fanclub site and share it with you first.  So special that i am both honoured and touched to have experienced it and moreso to be able to share it with all of you on here.  it is so exciting and literally just a taster for you out there of what is to come…..i was so amazed and excited by what i was hearing i almost forgot to breathe!
the first soundclip on ‘tia’s music’ page  is now a full song.
On monday, after we got back to my flat, and were settled in my living room with a cup of tea, tia and tommy came in with 2 cds and without saying a word put them into my player,  saying they would really value my opinion. what was on the cds?  well, only the 6 songs they’d written in wales with henry priestman and the storys.  i couldn’t believe that  a) i was hearing them in their very first form or b) that they were sat next to me while i was hearing them.  pure magic. what an amazing set of songs too….they will floor you i promise.
the one which really gave me chills was  the one featured on the site now….”devil’s gold” about the royal charter shipwreck on the rocks of moelfre near angelsey in wales.  henry preiestman of The christians, with whom they wrote the song, , had taken them down there and told them the story and showed them the plaque.
click here to read the story:

http://www.fronbb.fsnet.co.uk/lifeboat.htm

i guess the song was then born. it is absolutely stunning. Tia and tommy and i were sitting in 'our place' as it has come to be known…the marsden grotto up the cost here in south shields, eating dinner on Tuesday night.  the grotto is built into caves and there are stories rife of pirates, looting and shipwrecks round here.  tia was writing her setlist for the evening’s gig and said ‘shall we try it?’  i was smiling as i said ‘yes!’ i think tia felt a connection to the song sitting there…..
so she did it live – its first live performance - in the riverside and what an honour it was to share that moment.it was just so special.
the other part of this story is that they had met some people down there, one of whom was diving to the wreck,…tommy told me that at low tide it is only 25 ft down and you  can see it….he turned up to their gig that night and handed them two pieces of pottery from the ship with the knot emblem on them. as they played me the song on monday night, tommy placed the pottery in my hand….the connection i made to that song, holding those pieces of pottery was second to none.  All i knew was the story they’d told me, then suddenly i had a piece of this ship’s history in my hand….someone who died that day would have eaten from that plate. amazing.  really it is such a sad, sad story with a valuable lesson for us all.
so i’ve told you what we wanted to tell you….so go and listen -hear for yourself the magic they captured in that first cut.   email me your thoughts…i’ll post comments about the song on the comments page.  I know Tia would love to know what you make of it..though I can guess already!
the plan is for a 10 or 12 track acoustic album to released before christmas, due to popular demand for an acoustic album then an album recorded with their band should follow in early 2007.
all, i know is there are so many exciting things in the pipeline and this song is just the tip of the iceberg.  I can’t wait to share the ride!  2007 is going to be their year over here, i can feel it.

Andy writes: What was the book you read as a child which inspired 'Cracks in the Sidewalk"

Tia: Cracks in the Sidewalk is so dear to me. It came from an idea of a book I read when I was a kid and I really wanted it on the album! I'm glad that it touched you! .......Cracks came from the book A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. It's a wonderful story and was made into a movie....an old black and white movie. About a girl who grew up in Brooklyn, very poor, her father was a piano player playing in bars and everything. She was very close to her father and he inspired her. So everyday she'd sit and read and there was literally outside of her Brooklyn apartment a tree that was starting growing up and so she was inspired by this tree and so the book evolves around it.

NB  I recently read this book and it is wonderful – I cried more than once… it is so easy to see why this book inspired Tia to write ‘Cracks in the Sidewalk.’  “A TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN” by BETTY SMITH.  Well worth reading…I read it over Christmas on Tia’s recommendation, but it could be enjoyed anytime.  We’d love to hear your comments if you read it.    Thanks  Helen

Answer: 1984- won the Canadian Open Country Singing Contest
Question: What does Country Music mean to you?
Answer: roots/family/values/God

Answer: Elvis was modern in his time, as was Johnny Cash. Country music like every other genre must evolve and grow. It doesn’t mean get rid of the traditional artists and values though.
Question: In what area would you say we could do some changes in the Country Music?
Answer: acceptance of diversity and more creativity in artists. Make room for Indies.

Answer: I’m a Canadian living in Nashville TN. It’s in a state of change right now and God only knows where it’s going.
Question: Which considerable Song was for you till now in the history of the Country Music? And why?
Answer: Stand By Your Man. Gutsy song by a gutsy, remarkable lady and artist.
Question: Would you say there is a worldwide difference by the Country-Fans? And which once?
Answer: European fans more open to good music and less to star power. We’re too influenced by the "name" and not by the quality of music over here.
Question: How would you rate the country music in your hometown?
Answer: Nashville of course is different than my hometown of Port Dover, Canada. Canada is more open to creativity than Nashville is.
Question: How much do you believe that the influence of a song has a meaning in the public mind?
Answer: the song is a voice for society and I believe in the power of the song. I’m a songwriter!
Question: How would you describe the Stile of the Music you play?
Answer: Americana/country rock/Christian
Question: Why did you just pick up this kind and not another one?
Answer: it just came the most natural to me. I’ve sung everything from Rock to Big Band and this is really who I am.

Question: How important do you feel the Contact to the Fans? And why?

Answer: huge! The fans are why we as artists/songwriters keep doing what we do. Certainly not for the money (or lack of) and this crazy business we’re in.
Question: A very long incessant Trend is the fuse of Country- and Pop- Music. Where do you see the advantage and the disadvantage?
Answer: advantage: hipper and broader lyrical potential   Disadvantage: labels think they can only sign 13 year olds to be hip
Question: Do you have any musical model? And if yes, why those once?
Answer: Linda Ronstadt has the purest most emotional voice and delivery I’ve ever heard. She’s the greatest at just singing the song!
Question: With which kind of national and international Artist did you stand together on Stage?
Answer: Randy Bachman (Guess Who and BTO), Johnny Cash (Tommy Hunter Show)
Question: How much influence does your musical development have in your private life?
Answer: My boyfriend and I write and perform on stage together. This makes my work and time from my family in Canada a lot more easier.
Question: How old where you when you discovered you love to Country music.
Answer: 19
Question: When was your first time when you stood on stage?
Answer: 13
Question: If you would have to convince someone that the Country Music is the best, what arguments would you use?
Answer: Aside from the direction the music industry is in right now, country music is still the purest form of music on the market today. The song is still what matters most and lyrics are still king! Country fans are the most loyal, awesome people you’d ever want to meet and most country artists and songwriters are good, family oriented people with a strong faith in God.

Marie: Here we are at a venue in Worcester and I'm joined by Tia McGraff

Tia : Hi Marie ..How are you tonight?

Marie: I'm fine thank you J …Were going to talk about how you first got going and what inspired you to become a singer-songwriter?

Tia: When I was a little girl my parents had taken me to see Camelot and I was sitting in the audience and the orchestra started playing the overture and I got this incredible rush and I remember leaning over to my mother and saying "When I grew up I want to be on stage..I want to be a singer"  Years went by and I started singing in school & everything and then when I was about 19 I won the Canadian Open Country contest and that’s where I won some recording time, money and I bought a guitar and wrote my first song and recorded my first single.

Marie: So your debut album 'Small Town Life' that came out in 1994 so can you tell us a bit about that one?  J

Tia:  'Small Town Life' was my first album, full album. Up to that point I had released singles in Canada and it was written and recorded in Ontario where I'm from; just on the north side of Lake Erie. At the time Mary Chapin Carpenter had her album out and really inspired me for my 'Small Town Life' album. So we wrote the songs about life in small towns & finding positive stuff and ended up releasing 3 videos to CMT Canada from that as well. So it was a really growing experience. It was fun, just a ball recording it and getting my name out there as an artist.

Marie: I think the favourite of mine on that album is called 'The Tree House Song' ..I think it's so beautiful and before we play it do you want to tell a bit about that one?

Tia: I'm glad you like that J cos' I wrote it on my own and my cousin Rob had just passed away -  he'd been killed in an industrial accident.  And when he was he was a little boy we used to play in this tree house and so when I was writing the album I all of a sudden was driving along to the studio and I started to think about the tree house that Rob and my sister and I used to play in when he was just a little a boy. So I got to the studio and I'd already started the song and I sat down and I said to the producer I've started this song and I wrote it like that afternoon and when we went in to record it I wanted to capture that whimsical thing on it, so we started the beginning of it with what sounds like an old fashioned recording and when we were done, we ended up doing the video to it as well. So it’s a beautiful video, the video we shot in a tree house and there's children playing around it and everything

Marie: Well that's got even more meaning for me now, so were gonna play that song for you now….

Marie The follow up album that’s called Jewel's Café and I have to say that was probably my first real introduction to it and I put it into my machine to play it and was very surprised that the opener was a ballad, cos' normally you expect the first track to be quite upbeat so I thought I'm gonna like this! J  I absolutely love that track, so can you tell us a bit about that one?

Tia:  Jewels Café was a special album for me; we decided I would do another album in Canada and I had gotten together with a producer called Gary O'Connor, so we sat down, I said I want to write an album that talks about life in small towns but from a perspective of people going to clubs or going to bars, some place where they shared life's experiences. So that's what Jewels Café is about; it takes place in any kind of club or bar or café that everyone just goes to and shares life's moments and whether it be good things, bad things and the other night we were playing down Ashford ….called 'Oranges' and so at the very end Tommy and I were playing it the last song of the night and all of a sudden I sang 'Oranges Café' and there was a gasp and everyone started crying and everything (… Tia laughs J  ) so it was really fun to do that.

Marie: Its much like the one where sitting in now really, so were gonna play that song of you now 'Jewels Café…

Marie: And your new album the one you've come over to the UK to promote so we couldn't go without mentioning that one; its called 'Outside Of The Circle' and it’s a stunning album - some really good upbeat ones on there and some lovely ballads as well. I'm a sucker for ballads, absolutely love them and the one that really touched me was the one called 'What A Life', I think its so beautiful, I just want to hear a bit about the meaning behind that one?

Tia: You’re a girl after my own heart cos' I love ballads I would do an entire albums of ballads if I could (… Tia laughs J ). I had moved to Nashville from Canada and about 6 years ago and Tommy and I had been co-writing together and sharing life together and one day I left just after Christmas and I had left seeing my parents in Canada and drove back down to Nashville and by the time I got home to Tommy I was crying, I was homesick already and I came in and about a week later we were sitting down to write a song and that just came out 'What A Life' and it was really about the first song to inspire us to do the album 'Outside Of The Circle' . That’s the one were promoting and were just so excited about all the wonderful things happening here in the UK with the new album.

Marie: And before we play that song, I'd just like to hear who your influences were who you sort of listened to when you were growing up who shaped your music?

Tia: My favourite singer growing up I guess was Linda Ronstadt, Barbara Streisand ..I love Elton John and some bands that I really like..'The Eagles'..Tonight were playing and guy whose headlining is from the band ELO ..I was a huge ELO fan I loved them, so this is really exciting for us too.

Marie: So I'm sure everybody's gonna of fallen in love with your music, so do you want to tell us how we can get hold of your music?

Tia: Marie, They go to my website which is www.tiamcgraff.com and that's McGraff  ….M C G R A double "F" as in FRANK  J and there you can listen to our songs and read the bio and see the tour schedule where were performing.

Marie: I've been on there myself it’s a beautiful website and I highly recommend going on there and I thank you very much for your time and we're going to leave this now with that beautiful song 'What A Life'..

Tia: Thank You Marie and Thank you to all your listeners.

Andy Writes.. May I personally thank Marie for embracing Tia's music, making the effort to see her in Worcester and putting together such a delightful feature for the show and most importantly getting Tia heard on BBC Radio! Thanks for bringing so much fantastic music to my attention these past 3 years.
